International research in organic food systems
The secretariat of ICROFS initiates, coordinates, and participates in international research activities. The aim is to strengthen the positions of organic farming and food systems. Furthermore, ICROFS works for increasing the conversion possibilities from conventional farming production, as well as promoting the sustainable development of farming and food systems as a whole and to contribute to the development of agro-ecological methods.
Projects can either be geographical focussed activities or horizontal activities that applied globally or to a wider range of organic farming and food systems.
International research:
Chinese-Danish network on Systemic Approaches to Pest Management without Pesticides
ICROFS coordinates the ‘Chinese-Danish networking on Systemic Approaches to Pest Management without Pesticides’ funded by International Network Programme of the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The network was established in collaboration with the China Agricultural University, Beijing. The network consists of Danish and Chinese researchers who will identify joint research interests and research areas and provide recommendations for research topics of priority for the two countries. The network held its 1st workshop in April 2012 in China while the 2nd workshop was held in Denmark in August 2012.

Biodiversity benefits organic agriculture and organic agriculture benefits biodiversity– true or false?
In the spirit of the International Year of Biodiversity 2010, ICROFS together with the Embassy of Denmark in Washington DC, USA, invited a group of researchers, policy makers, and research administrators to a ½ day seminar at the Embassy of Denmark in Washington DC. The aim was to solicit knowledge and opinions regarding the relationship between organic agriculture and agro-biodiversity.
Research has shown higher levels of biodiversity in organic agriculture than in conventional systems at field, farm and landscape levels. This is one of the reasons for support to organic agriculture among consumers and politicians. However, it has been questioned whether the biodiversity in present forms of organic agriculture is sufficient to make a significant contribution to nature preservation and to securing ecosystem services.
